trouble shifting into reverse

I have a Trisonic 1973 with a 165HP Mercury straight six GM engine. I got the boat out of the shop last spring with more problems then repairs for a coolant pump change. I had the boat running fine last summer and I slowly noticed trouble of shifting into reverse where now it is totally inoperative. I have looked in the Clymer repair manual for help, and I could not find out any information if this is a cable adjustment or gearing replacement problem? I do not trust the local shop and am looking to repair it myself-any help? Thanks Steve

I had a similar problem with my mercrusier only it wouldn't go in forward.
The cable broke inside of the lower unit. (I know you didn't want to hear that)
The best thing to do is start at the shifter and make sure that everything is hooked up. Make sure that the cable moves back and forth back at the transom where it goes inside. If it's working there, your going to have to go inside the lower unit to fix it.
Good luck
