steering cale

I have a 1978 lund 19.6ft. boat. Boat won't turn steering column turns freely but sounds like it's stripped at the column. I assume it's the cable. I got it disconnected from the motor, but can't free it from the column. It is a rack system, help.

Buy a new steering system... They're not expensive and are easy to install. You might want to check out the parts section of "West Marine" for the possibility of buying just the cable... but I wouldn't risk the possiblity that it's the steering wheel portion that's at fault....
