mercruiser transom panel replacement

I've been told the transom panel in my outdrive is bad--never heard of it--I have a Cobalt (1978 Contessa with a 260/alpha drive--anyone have any experience with such a thing ?? help??cp:

Not sure about the term transom "panel". If your referring to the actual transom assembly......then yes, it is somewhat common to have a bad or rotted transom. The failure is typically due to water intrusion into the transom and rotting the wood over a period of time.

This is a big job that would entail removing the drive, engine and gimbal housing as well as any other component mouted to the transom of the boat. Once the components are removed, we usually sublet the boat out to a fiberglass shop to cut out the rotted wood and replace and reglass new wood to the transom.
