2001 Mercruiser 4.3 ltr. dieseling

My husband has a 2001 Sea Ray boat with a 4.3 ltr engine and he is having a problem with the motor dieseling when he is trying to turn the motor off. It doesn't do it all the time though. Any ideas or suggestions?

I have the same engine in a Fisher Deck boat. We have experienced the dieseling on a couple of occasions, usually after we have been running it hard, pulling skiers or a large inflatable, and a boat full of people. Where we dock there is a fairly long distance we must travel at idle speed only, and it has never happened when we shut down at the dock, only out in the middle of the lake when we shut down to retrieve the skiers.

I'm guessing that it is aggravated by elevated temperatures, but the temp gauge doesn't seem to be much different at those times.

Ours is the carburated version of that engine, I don't think the fuel injected version has that problem.
