140 HP evinrude shifting into nuetral problem

Have problem with 140 hp evinrude outboard shifting into nuetral from forward position. Took into shop and cable was replaced but problem still there. Boat runs fine and lever can move from forward position to center position smoothly. But boat does not engage into nuetral. There is also no clicking sound that used to be there which indicates a fine shift into nuetral. But it does slow down and keeps moving forward at idle speed. I have to pull the shifter into reverse and then put into nuetral from reverse for it to engage into neutral. It is also very hard shifting from nuetral position to try to engage into reverse. Once engaged in reverse I can smoothly put into nuetral position just fine with clicking sound. Any help would be great!

It's possible your cable adjustment is off just slightly - not allowing the engine to get into neutral from forward . Sounds as if, when shifting into reverse from forward/neutral, you're hitting the neutral detent that you never quite got to from forward.

The shop gave it back to you messed up? Bring it back to them and have them adjust it correctly. Sounds like they just set it up like the one that came off, installed it, and called it good. That won't work because cables stretch. Sheesh, it's hard to find good help anymore.
