7.4L Mercruiser MPI 2000MY

I just purchased a boat with a 7.4L Mercruiser 7.4L 310HP engine. When I drive it I get a hot oil smell like fresh oil burning on the engine. Are there any common problems that I should be looking for? (Intake gasket/valve cover gasket).
With this same boat I get a high pitched whistle at mid range acceleration... any thoughts on this?

The areas you mention are a great place to start. Sounds like you have a tiny oil drip onto the exhaust manifolds right where they bolt onto the heads.... not an atypical problem.. check those valve cover gaskets first....

When your engine is warming up from a long (days/weeks) period of inactivity (and the leak has had a chance to drip) - open the engine cover and see where the smoke is coming from - if you can smell it, you can probably see it... and help identify which specific area it's coming from.
