Proper storage of outboard

Is it important for an outboard motor to sit upright when in storage? I may be removing for transom repair - it would easiest to remove from transom and leave inside boat but concerned about that - I know on a 4 cycle motor that would be harmful due to oil getting into cylinders but on a 2 cycle is there anything to be concerned about? Thanks.

Probably wouldn't hurt it, but first, prep it as for winter storage. Drain all fuel from the carb and filter, and drain and refill the lower unit with fresh grease.
