Mercury outboard 40hp

I am new to boating and would like to know how to run my outboard without being in the water. It seems I would need to run the motor to do regular maintenance. Can I hook a hose up to the motor? Is there an RPM limit? I would just like to make sure the thing will start up for me before I get out on the water and make a fool of myself. (8-(

There are adapters available to provide water to the engine.
DO NOT RUN IT WITHOUT WATER FLOWING THROUGH. I don't mean to shout, but I hate to see an engine smoked.

What maintenance do you need to do with it running? Spark plugs, gas filter, lower unit grease are all handled with the engine off.

I understand that you want to know it runs before you hit the water, but have water flowing thru it and don't over rev.
You can give it a few blips to see that it revs, but don't wind it up with no load.

Just needed to get the oil temperature up to help draining. Thanks for the advise.
