new to boating

recently pick up a bucket case boat.It has a 898 mercrusier,1978-80engine in it.not the original engine.my question is anyone out there can tell me,can an automotive distributorwork in this gm engine.before I buy ome,I want to know if the engine will run.

NO NO NO! A marine engine requires a marine distributor with a screw down cap (spark prevention). They are not hard to find (WestMarine.com - Overtons.com - etc.) You will need to identify the engine year and size to purchase the proper unit.
