Question Detaching the steering?

Trying to detach the steering column from the dashboard on a 1977 Reinell 22' cabin cruiser so I can replace the dashboard. How do I remove the steering column? I have removed the steering wheel from the column but cannot remove the column from the dash. Please help!

Is there a black round plastic cover right under the wheel? most I have delt with have it. Just take the 2 screws out and under the cover there are bolts that hold it in place.

Look at the other end of the column, under the dash on the backside of the gearbox. There may be a little steel pin near the end of the shaft. Use a nail punch to drive the pin out of the shaft and the column will pull free. You'll still have to remove the bolts as samauri suggested and let the whole housing dangle by the cable. Don't kink the cable! Support the housing with a piece of wire or string while the dash is out so it doesn't sag.
