I like the factory manuals the best but they are spendy. A clymer will be better than nothing but I feel they are too broad for indepth work. Then again if you can post a detailed question I have the factory manual at work and have been to a couple yamaha service schools.

Yamaha 40hp C40TLRX

Thanks, I am looking at possibly removing and cleanning all carbs. This motor has been sitting for about 2 years? He said the motor had no power and was running rich. Where would you start? Compression test first? Plus general maintenance? This is Yamaha 40hp C40TLRX. Thank you.

This motor has a sticker on the lower unit that say's 04/98.
Is it a 1998 or 1999? Because Yamaha shows it to be a
1999 motor?

I would start with a compression test and new spark plugs.
A rich condition might be caused by a leaking neadle and seat. a simple test would be to remove the air box and prime the primer bulb and look into the carb to see if fuel is coming out into the throught. If it leaks the it will need a carb kit from yamaha they are a little spendy but it comes with floats and neadles.
I think it would be considered a 1999
