big bang

I have a mercury Black Max 150 that I just bought to put on my Triton bass boat.
At first this motor was great but now in the last week it has developed a problem i assume is in the lower unit.

As you accellerat from the hole it starts off a little way and then makes a bang then it resumes running very well. I have not tried to stop and start again to see if it does it again but i assume it will ... it runs well directly out of the hole but about 20 or 30 feet from start it makes that bang and then resumes running great...

Can anyone help me here ????

Thanks,
Nate

Pull your drain plug from your gearcase, there should be a magnet on the end. Look for metal on the magnet a gray film is ok but there shouldn't be anything silver.

If it is the gearcase take it to a shop, the cost of special tools required to properly rebuild them are more than the price of a rebuild.

Another avenue is a aftermarket sei gearcase.
