35 johnson veeerrrryyyy ssslllloooowww
Hello,
I just got a 15' bonito boat with a 35 hp johnson on it. I was told it went much faster than it does. With 4 people and an ice chest, it goes 7 miles per hour. That won't cut it. I don't have a tach on it, but by the sound of the engine, it seems to be running around 3500 to 4k rpm. It has a 10X13 prop on it. I don't know much about boats, so I don't know what to do to make this better, but from what I'm reading online, I should be seeing somewhere around 20mph I think. Am I wrong?
I read about a guy pulling a skier with a 16.5' bass boat and a 35hp johnson. No way a skier could go behind me. I don't want to pull a skier, I just want to go fishing. Someone else mentioned raising the motor. How far? What do I do to get more from this motor if I wind up keeping it?

Four people and cooler could weigh 800+ pounds, which could prevent that little 35 from getting any speed. Especially if two or more of the passengers are sitting up front. (Too much weight in the bow will prevent the boat from getting on plane.)
How does it run with only you in the boat?

Well, I ran it with just me and another guy and without a GPS to read the exact speed, it felt like maybe 15mph. I have another problem now though. One cylinder quit firing. I checked for spark and after letting the motor sit for a while, it might spark both plugs a couple times, then it dumps one cylinder. No spark. I can switch leads from the cdi to the coils and the other plug will fire, so I know the coils are good. What should I test next? I am in the process of trying to make the seller give me my money back for this boat because of several issues that he lied to me about. In the meantime, it is my boat at the moment and I want to fish... I already spent the money on licenses and intend to use them.... even if I have to go slow for the time being. ($200 for 4 non-resident licenses)
This is a model J35ELCND motor. Thanks!
BTW: I talked to an old Johnson mechanic, been working on OMCs for 44 years. He said this motor should run this boat faster than that with that prop. He says a 6hp would run it that fast even with the load. I dunno.

Encouraging.
I worked on the motor some more today. While cranking, and tapping on the CDI module, I get a few random sparks, but only when tapping on the CDI, so apparently it is bad.
Also, I found out that the carb and the timing plate were out of sync. The carb was reaching full throttle when the timing plate was only maybe 2/3rds full. I don't know what kind of effect that would have on engine performance, but I'm sure it has some. Hoping to get it together for the weekend to try it again.

I put a new CDI on it and synchronized everything and it runs great, but it still runs 7 mph w/4 people. I don't know, maybe it's getting rich at full throttle or something. It sounds smooth, just doesn't pick up to proper RPM. Sounds like it stops around 36-3800 rpm.

I got rid of it. Somebody else wanted it more than I did and made me a good trade for it. I did disclose the speed issue, he wanted it anyway.

Depending on what year it was, the CDI packs were very finicky. The real problem could have been any of a bunch of things. At least you won't be pulling your hair out.
