i have a 78 mercruiser i dont know much about boats this is my first one i replaced the shift cable on it b ut i replaced it with the new style can someone help me with the adjustment on it

hi rick this is jim u answered my question on the shift cable it did help me out with the adjustments i have just one more question the allen screw in the outdrive on the end of the cable does it have to b adjusted or screw it in and put the wire thru it and thanks again

The set screw simply holds the cable in place.
Here's another tutorial: Replacing your Alpha One shift cable.
The problem is, most of the info online pertains to the Alpha One. The Alpha One didn't come on the market until 1983. Although they are very similar, they are not identical. The links I've provided will get you in the ball park, but you may have to tweak the adjustments after the fact.
BTW, it's a good time to replace the shift bellows while you have it apart. Use dish soap as a lubricant to make it easier to insert the shift cable.
