20 HP Johnson outboard problem
1967 (almost new) 20 HP Johnson I just got back from the shop. Age required some minor work. It has taken 3 or 4 weeks to get my boat ready so just took it out yesterday. Started fine, but some noise. Almost deaf so hard for me to say it was a problem or my ears. Shifted into forward and the noise went away. Did a rundown the lake and back and motor ran just ok, I'll work on that later. But when I idled down and shifted into neutral and it squealed like mad. Shifted back to forward and noise stopped.
Now, the problem with taking it back to the service guy, his shop burned 2 weeks after I picked up my motor. Article said he would rebuild, but I'll find out tomorrow how that is progressing. In the mean time, I'm not afraid to do what I can. Any thoughts on the squealing when I shift into neutral?
Note, the repair guy is a well established repairman, respected by many, so I know he will take care of it, if/when he has a shop. I have a newer 5 HP I can use now.

I went over to see the mechanic (owner) who worked on my motor. His shop is toast, literally. Hit by lightening and being 70 it is questionable he will go through the rebuilding effort. 45 years of accumulation and the insurance co needs receipts and/or documentation on every part, new and used. Not going to happen, IMO.
I talked to him and best he could think of was perhaps the shift linkage is rubbing against the drive shaft. Looks like I'm going to have to increase my experience on outboard motor repair.
I'll first get a tub of water up behind my boat with the motor and duplicate the noise. I'll also get my son over so he may be able to isolate the source. My ears have no directional capabilities, it's just noise.
