15 hp tach

Hi guys i have a 2014 mercury 15 hp out board with the remote throttle and electric start. On the electrical harness there is a plug with 3 connectors in it (I think) and it said in the manual that it was a tachometer harness. It doesn't say what kind to get or how to install it. Any suggestions?

Most likely you will need to get a Mercury proprietary tachometer based on their technology and the number of cylinders of the engine. I don't think going down to the parts house and getting a Sun Tach will suffice.

Frearson screws versus Phillips/flathead etc.

I posted to this forum because I've heard boating Frearson screws are commonly used in the marine industry. Compared to Phillips, Frearson screws are great because you only need one or two sizes for most jobs, and they allow for much better torque. Sadly, Phillips screws were infamously designed to 'cam out' easily to prevent over-tightening in construction of early cars, but the solution causes a greater problem today in that slipping can easily ruin the screw recess, as well as the bit potentially, and causes operator fatigue (pressing into the screw to prevent slipping). I'd love to hear comments on how Frearson compares to alternatives such as Phillips, Pozidriv, Robertson (square), and Torx (Hexalobular). Does Frearson allow as much torque as those?Read More

I hate this task. It takes several year to consume a cartridge, so I am always at unit #1 on the learning curve. I cannot get the piston rod back into the barrel because the spring will not compress in a straight line around the piston rod. It spirals, effectively increasing its diameter. My 70 yr old hands are not strong enough to muscle this back together. Am I missing anything simple?Read More
