Boat Motor 2002 Mercury outboard 225hp needs overhaul
Boat motor with a boat mechanic we trust and have used before. It needs an overhaul (not sure the details since he talked to other family member) except the cost will be $3K to $4K. My fist thought is if spending that amount of money on a boat motor from 2002 is worth it? Assuming all the figures are correct for the repair not sure if we should put money into it. Thanks for all your feedback.

Not a pro. That's a big engine but add to that number the current value of the old engine before repair, always worth something to someone, say $1,000. So that would be $4K to $5K. Then, after repair what would the old engine be worth?
Can't help with actual numbers but I seem to get burned every time I put a lot of money into a repair of something. Guess I don't learn.

I was looking around online. Those motors are big bucks. They're getting 6-7K for used ones around the same vintage.
The new Verado series 225 is WELL over 12k.
If you bought that motor new and it's in good physical shape..... rebuild it.
