I have a 454 Chevrolet (330 Mercruiser). Recently I had the block rebuilt. Now when I run it, the freeze plugs pop out. Any reason why this happens, and what can I do about it? Thanks, Stan

You didnt say if it was fresh or raw water cooled.
If the closed cooling system is overpressurized
it can pop out a corroded or improperly installed
core plug.
if it is not a closed cooled system the plugs may
have just been improperly installed.
sorry

Has the freeze plugs/plug popped out several times or is this a one time event, since the rebuild?

I would suspect it's happened only one time. If not, it could be the pressed in plugs are the incorrect type/diameter for this engine.

Would like to know more about the follow up findings on this topic. Kindly update us when the correction to the problem is determined. Do this by using the reply button to continue this topic.

Freeze plugs

RE: The freeze plugs in my boat. They did pop out EVERY time I ran it after the engine was rebuilt, never before. Finally, I bought some high temp. gasket sealer and put on the plugs. No more freeze plugs popping out!!! THANKS TO EVERYONE FOR THEIR SUGGESTIONS.
