On my 66 Johnson 100 HP. It seems like when ever I take the cover off my motor, It runs alot faster. Is this common? I hate the noise but I like the power. Can anyone give me some suggestions, or perhaps explain this?

I am NOT an outboard mechanic, but it sounds to me like the fuel/air adjusting screw is set too rich. Too much fuel and not enough air. When you take the cover off, you are allowing more air in the carb's, making the fuel/air mixture leaner.

Try leaning out the fuel/air mixture, and see if that does not help.
