Question Small Outboard 3hp

Hello.

I bought a small 12' jon boat this summer for inland lake bass fishing. It worked wonderfully this summer through the fall. I was getting ready to winterize the motor (a small 3hp Federal) had it on the bench in its water bucket and went to fire it up and it wouldn't start no matter what I did. It usually starts on the second pull. I had let it sit for probably a month without running, but I changed nothing since I last used it. I checked the plug and it looks okay.

This is my first boat, motor other than a canoe so I'm really not sure what to do short of taking it to a professional and paying the service fee. Any suggestions would be much appreciated or even links to other specialty sites?

Thank you in advance.

welcome to the wonderful world of boating.
There are three things that make your motor run.
Compression, fuel and spark. my guess would be
that you are looking for fuel. Does it have some?
is the vent and fuel valve open?
next check for spark, carefully, its high voltage,
it wont kill you but it'll give you a jump.

Like BoatMech says only 3 things to check. I think you have oil and water in the fuel tank. Drain the tank and the bowl of the carburator. If you see a mayonaise like mixture in the fuel or coming out of the carburator its water and 2 cycle oil mixed. Until this is gone and out of the jets nothing will happen. If a small amount of starting fluid fires the engine for a few seconds thats your problem.
