I think a 2 stroke engine 250cc - 500cc from a motorcycle or 4-wheeler would be a good choice.

Great looking machine.I hate to call it a go cart.Kinda stretching that term a bit.LOL A friend and i have been toying with that idea ourselves.More of a dragster sand/mud model though, with a monster engine.

NO! Don't use a 2 stroke from a motor cycle! They do not run a counter balancer like a four wheeler motor. They will shack you and it apart. Also might want to stick with four wheeler motors for there internal gearing. They are geared lower than motor cycles to carry the extra frame weight.

Id think you will want some thing with an auto tranny or auto clutch motor like an old Honda ATC 200s(these are rock solid and would move you to about 50 (MPH !) pretty good).Air cooled four stroke.Pull start around 18 to 20 HP id guess.
As for full auto tranny id look for a Polaris.Careful which engine or you'll have to find some where to put a radiator.humm most of these are also shaft drive.

Wonder what type of centrifugal clutches they make. That would fit a four wheeler motor. An old 200Sx would work great also being electric start.Or even a newer 200ex.Both have a reverse gear i think.

Might also need to put an air scoop on there some where to direct air around or over your seat onto the cylinder head of the motor. To help it cool.Might rig up an electric fan.

What type of motor did you have on it? I assum it didnt run or was to fast?
To fast is there such a thing!
