Honda 300 fourtrax kick starter quit working

I just inherited a Honda 300 fourtrax, not sure of the year, The kick starter does not work. I pulled the side cover and there is not sign of any damaged gears or metal on the bottom. At times it will work some what but it is not consistent, about once every twenty tries. What am I missing, or what am I doing wrong?
Swamper.

Someone told my son that the kick start is for a HOT START and will only work after the engine has warmed up. I haven't run it long enough to warm the engine because I still have to change the gasket on the side cover. The electric start doesn't work either. I tested the solenoid using a remote switch and the battery, In essence by passing the start switch and it started right away. Any one have a schematic of the start system.

it sounds as if the one way clutch is not engaging, the number one cause of this is people using automotive oil in the bike, automotive oils contain friction modifiers which screw up the one way clutch, sometimes by running atv oil in the bike for several kms,the clutchs will come back and work fine, but usually require replacement, they arent a big deal to change

I don't believe the oil wrong oil is causing the problem in this case. The oil is drained at this time. I got the local Honda shop to pint me a exploded view of the kick starter arrangment and there apears to be a ratchet gear that is ingaged by a spring when the lever is pushed on. I now wonder if the spring is weak or broken and if anyone had this probem before I tear it down.

Are the lights working? Mine would not start with starter, but i could bypass solenoid and start it. It had a blown fuse.
