EZ-GO Golf cart backfire problem

I have a 1985 EZ-GO 2-cycle gas cart. After warming up, the engine will backfire when you step on the accelerator pedal. It will backfire from exhaust. Any ideas?

The first thing in my mind is the rev limiter,, but on a 25 yr old cart, you'll have to dig first... What is the spark plug like?? how old?? What is the condition of the carb &/or the fuel pump?? Old EZ-go's around here had a problem with crank seals leaking air & causing similar problems..as well as crank bearings going bad.. Make sure you have a clean carb,, new plug,, & good fuel to the carb & we''l take it from there... ..Roger
