Do you know why the sled has been sitting in the barn unused? If you have not gone through it a bit diagnosing it's hard to say because it could be almost anything. My first guess would be that the engine seized-up possibly from being run without oil or from overheating, but that's just a guess. You will have to give us more information if you want serious help.

The rope will only pull out about 5 inches and then will not pull out any farther. It takes a
50:1 gas/oil mix. Thats about all I know, I havent had a lot of time to do some investigating. I have a feeling that it will be easier just to sell it as it is. Do you have any idea what it will be worth not being able to start. its a john deere trailfire 440, and i think its a 1979.

I am afraid a old, dead sled is worth very little. You could try searching the web. There are some who like restoring old sleds. They might help get you on track to restore yours or put parts from yours to good use bringing another one back to life.

most likely, i would guess that it was run with straight gas, and the piston walls scored and the piston just got,,,, stuck. you can fix it my taking the head off, (piston might be really stuck in it) use some PB blaster and beat it out. most likely you will need a new piston, if the old one cant be buffed out, and you'll certainly need new compression rings and head gasket.
however, since it sat so long, and depending on its condition, a full on restore might be needed to get a decent sled.
since im only guessing, this may not be the case.
