LED retrofit in 1978 DT250

Looking for opinions on this.
One of the bikes in the shop is a 1978 Yamaha DT250. This project bike is a restore/upgrade.
One of the areas I'm working on right now is the headlight for off road riding. The bike is a 6V system and the headlight isn't very strong. Keeping with the original look, the idea is to use a number of warm white LEDs in a star pattern around the OEM headlight bulb. The internal light reflector is metal so it will work as a heatsink.
Looking at most LED lights, each LED is lensed and I'm wondering if we can get away without lensing each LED if kept close to the center of the reflector.
These LEDs will be secondary to the OEM hi/low beam and on their own switch. Looking at probably 8 3W LEDs.

Thoughts?

The internal reflector is metal but they may be of little help to the LED's.
Are you looking at a raw LED's or LED modules ?
Heat dissipation is very important.

Raw 3W LEDs, attached to the metal OEM bulb reflector within the headlight assembly.
I'm having issues uploading pictures from my phone, so will do so from home tonight to show the configuration of the LEDs.
