12 HP on 42" deck??

My husband and I are still contemplating what to do about our 42" Huskee with 17ohv tecumseh. We have found a 12 HP Briggs motor for $100 By the time we either rebuild the Tecumseh starter or buy a new one, then get a repair manuel and adjust the value lash (which we are assuming is the problem) we would have at least that much if not more into it. But my hubby doesn't know if a 12HP would pull that size deck and body. Any opinions??

Hello Gary's wife!

I have seen many 12 hp 42" cut mowers. It should work. It may not be as strong as the old engine, but the Briggs is a far better engine anyway. Repairing the old engine shouldn't be hard, and the starter should not cost that much to rebuild...unless it needs hard parts...(bendix, armature, etc...).
