Craftsman Lawn Tractor Belt Problem

We have a Craftsman 16.5 hp 46" lawn mower. Model #917.272011. While mowing yesterday the cutting blades kept starting and stopping. Today my husband checked it and the belt keeps twisting. The book says nothing about this. Got any clues? Iwent to Craftsman site and didn't see anything except items to buy. Thanks for your help! Tusassy

I would check the idler pulley..and if any of it is damaged, also check the belt itself it could be a bad belt

Hello tusassy!

I agree...Check your tensioner and idler pulleys. They should spin freely and quietly. Also, the belt should be tight when the blade is engaged, or if it has an electric PTO, then the belts should be tight all the time. More than likely the belt will need to be replaced, as it deforms the back side of it when it rides on the pulleys backwards. Let us know what you find!
