wet gas cap

I hope this is a general enough guestion as to not need model number, engine size, etc.. I noticed the gas cap on my push mower being wet with gas while running. What is causing the gas to try to come out the vent holes in the cap?

It is a Briggs and Stratton. I think 5 hp.

Hello boman, fuel caps are made two ways, older styles have a card board liner with a few holes to vent and new plastic caps have rubber one way vent valves. The card board type can get fuel logged or become ill fitting allowing gas get by and it will come out the small hole or holes when the tank is full. Replacing the liner or entire cap will cure the problem. When plastic caps leak they most often are replaced because the rubber valve alone if replacable can be almost as much as a new cap.....Mike
