Hunt & surging lawn mower engine

My brand new YardMachines Briggs and Stratton engine goes back and forth between hunting & surging and running just fine. It doesn't seem to affect the cutting/mowing performance, but sounds just awful. Am I hurting the engine by continuing to mow while it hunts & surges? Why would a brand new engine "act up" like this? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hello fishkat!

I would have it fixed if it's a new machine. Warranty should cover it. It probably won't hurt anything short-term, but it will take a toll on the mower in time. does it help to engage the choke partway? If so, the engine is starving for fuel.
