Engine Wiring Question

Teccumseh ohm120 on Miller welder

Hi Was putting in a new battery when I connected the neg terminal last, noticed a spark with switch off. Traced down to diode in wire to coil going to alternator behind flywheel.The wire was getting hot as if it was grounded. Don't have a tester and was wondering if diode is bad since it should only let current from alt to battery and not from battery to alt. With connector of diode and another wire to alt disconnected, I don't get the spark when neg grd is connected to battery.

After a day of messing, I removed the flywheel and cleaned the coil. Got a tester and found that the diode was ok. Put the darn thing back together and lo-and-behold, the ground went out when connecting the connector from alt. Don't know what I did, but am satisfied with results. Thanks
