Tractor Troubles

John Deere 160 Rear Diff
Lost drive on my JD 160 yesterday. Heard a popping noise at right rear wheel and then tractor would not go. The axle shaft turns but has no resistance and does not turn the opposite side as before. Any idea if this is an easy shaft replacement, or is it now junk?

Hello rs-petty!
It does sound like you have an internal problem. The only way to tell what has gone wrong for sure would be to pull it apart and look. It may just be that the gear inside came off of the axle, and you might be able to put it back on and install a new retainer clip. OR...the gear may have broken, axle may have broken, etc etc etc. Could be relatively cheap and simple, or maybe not . Let us know what you find. Hopefully it's nothing major.

I guess it kinda depends on how valuable your time is, lol. If it needs much in the way of parts, then you're right. Tranny parts aren't usually cheap. If a retainer clip broke or came off, then you just have to spend a little time. Good luck whichever way you decide!
