snowmobile coil
I repaired a 2 cylinder snowmachine for a guy and the machine ran fine but after he drove it for a while the coil melted and caught on fire. What would cause the coil to do this? When he brought it to me it would run but it wouldn't shut off so I hooked up a kill switch to the 2 coils. Is that were the kill switch should be hooked up?It stops the engine fine.He also had a spark plug wire from a vehicle on the coil that melted would that be the problem?Any help would be appreciated.

Hello racer!
I don't get to work on any snowmobiles down here in S. GA., but...The only times I ever saw a coil melt , it was due to one of 2 things: Power going to the coil on the ground/kill wire, and...severe engine overheating...as in burning debris in the cooling fins near the coil. Most times, power has been applied to the coil kill wire and it heats the windings until the whole thing just melts and burns up the windings.
Make sure you don't have voltage connected to the coil in the wrong place. I don't know if the coils on this thing even require battery voltage at all. Most small engine coils don't.
I hope this helps, and maybe someone more familiar with the machine can give you more specific advice.
