fuel mixture

I have a 1984 honda 250R 3 wheeler. It is a two stroke and I was wondering if I have to mix the fuel 20:1 like it calls for or can I mix it 50:1 since oils are better now? It smokes alot and there is oil baked on the end of the muffler when I mix it 20:1. Should I keep mixing it that way or is it safe to mix it 50:1?

Hello racer, I think I would dig up Mobil's 800 number and chat with their people about your problem. They have a 2 cycle synthetic that can be run 100:1. Not that I suggest you try that but they may suggest 40:1 or even more. A compression test would tell a great deal about this engine because if its poor nothing could be expected to burn completely. I do think you have valid thoughts about oils being better today.....Mike
