Pull rope on craftsman lawn mower

My pull rope was cut. I have the reel off and am ready to place a new cord. Not sure of the steps. What I did first with installation is place the new handle and rope through the frame and snaked it to the reel. There I am trying to wind it up and hope it has enough tension once I then place the reel back onto to the mower. I rewinds like it should but I have too much slack in the rope. Can anybody offer me some advice on how to correctly get the rope back on. Thanks!

Hello mpic!

Wind up the spool in the starter mechanism all the way, then back it up until the hole in the spool lines up with the hole in the cover....THEN snake the rope in and tie a knot in the end.

Hope that helps!
