eager 1 5.5 hp will not start

I can pull the cord forever it seems and will not start.
When i pull the cord it snaps back sometimes and i'll hear a pop and some white smoke comes out of the exhaust and sometimes the air filter.
I know i dont have the trottle settings adjusted properly because I dont know what the settings are.
The mower has; new plug, new oil, new air filter.
the plug gets wet so it seems it is getting fuel.
any suggestions?

Hello scomike!

Sounds to me like you have a sheared flywheel key. You will need to remove the flywheel to replace it. Check first to be sure your blade is not loose. Have you hit something like a root or brick with the blade recently?

Not sure what throttle settings you are trying to set...the cable? Idle speed?

Yes the blade must be on and tight for the mower to run. The wieght of the blade acts like a flywheel. Have you had the blade off all along?

Just want to say thanks ........... it was the flywheel key that fixed it.
I put the blade on and it started 1st time.
1995 model - fully tuned up and running fine.

Yep...The blade acts as a flyweight to help keep the engines' momentum going around in the right direction. Without the blade, the engine will kick back, as you have seen.

Glad we could help!
