eager 1 5.5 hp will not start

eager 1 5.5 hp will not start

I can pull the cord forever it seems and will not start.
When i pull the cord it snaps back sometimes and i'll hear a pop and some white smoke comes out of the exhaust and sometimes the air filter.
I know i dont have the trottle settings adjusted properly because I dont know what the settings are.
The mower has; new plug, new oil, new air filter.
the plug gets wet so it seems it is getting fuel.
any suggestions?

Hello scomike!

Sounds to me like you have a sheared flywheel key. You will need to remove the flywheel to replace it. Check first to be sure your blade is not loose. Have you hit something like a root or brick with the blade recently?

I have hit things in the past.
when i take off the shroud and look at the flywheel i cant see the flywheel key , should i be able to or do i have to remove the flywheel first?

Just took off the flywheel and guess what!! a sheared flywheel key !!!
I will get a replacement and report back when installed.
Oh , still don't know what the settings are for the throttle.

Not sure what throttle settings you are trying to set...the cable? Idle speed?

I put a new key in and the engine still does not want to start.
the cord kicks back and the engine does not want to kick in.
any suggestions ?

I have spark, and took the shroud off to make sure the key looks good and it does.
every seems ok , oh and i have the blade off, does that make a diffeerence?

Yes the blade must be on and tight for the mower to run. The wieght of the blade acts like a flywheel. Have you had the blade off all along?

Just want to say thanks ........... it was the flywheel key that fixed it.
I put the blade on and it started 1st time.
1995 model - fully tuned up and running fine.

Yep...The blade acts as a flyweight to help keep the engines' momentum going around in the right direction. Without the blade, the engine will kick back, as you have seen.
