Low voltage

I have a Briggs and Strator, 4.5HP OHV engine.
It won't even turn over. Sounds like a bad battery. So I tested it with a volmeter, it read 4.5V. That sounds pretty low. This happens every spring. Can I use a car battery to start it, or is there a way I can charge this lawnmowver battery?

Sounds like you may need a new battery. Try charging it. It should read 12.5 - 13.0 volts. Keep your voltmeter on it while cranking...it should only drop to 10 - 10.5 volts. Is this on a riding lawnmower...possibly your alternator isn't working.
