Riding Mower Brakes

Murray riding mower
We have an older Murray riding mower. It acts like the "brakes" have gone out on it. However, someone told me it does not have "brakes". Does it? If so, is it a do-it-yourself repair? If no brakes, what would the problem be? Thanks for any info.

I have had the exact same problem on a murray lawn tractor. It took me about 6 hourse to figure them out and fix them. It is much easier to get the them with the rear wheel off. On the one I fixed, when you step on the brake pedal (this one had the clutch pedal on the left with a seperate brake pedal on the right) it pulls on a spring, the spring is connected to a bracket which when pulled will rotate on a bolt and push on two pins. The two pins push on the brake shoe and the brake shoe is forced against the disk. It took me a while to figure this out, plus some parts were missing so I had to fabricate a little, plus they hadn't worked in over ten years. It took a 1/2" wrench to remove the entire assembly so the entire project isn't that hard.

Hello JBA!
Before getting in it too far, try tightening the 1/2" nut on the brake assembly a few turns. Test, and if the brakes aren't working yet, turn it a few more turns until you get brakes. If you do not get brakes, remove the assembly and clean and lube it and replace the brake pads. It is found on the transaxle, in the rear, under the mower. Look for the spring that moves on the side of the tranny when you engage the brake pedal. If this is a rear engine rider, the brake is on the side of the gearbox under the seat. Some of the older ones are not adjusted by a 1/2" nut, but with an allen wrench.
