John Deere 170 lawn tractor

When I put the switch on to engage the blades on my John Deere 170 lawn tractor, there is a long delay before the blades start rotating; this does not happen every time, but intermittently. What is going on? George

Hello George!

Check the tension of your belt...the one going from the engine to the deck (primary deck belt). If it is not tight, check the tensioner. I have seen a few of these tensioners get stiff on the pivot shaft, and they don't rotate into the belt to keep it tight like they should at times. Other times, it does good. If that is the problem, remove the tensioner assembly from the deck and clean the rust off the post that it pivots on and grease it and reinstall.

Let us know what you find!
