Governor connection

Governor connection
I have a MTD Yardman 22 inch rotary mower model z080. I removed the gas tank to clean it as the mower has been running rough and the tank had dirt in it. When I removed it all springs remained in place except a heavier type link piece. I believe one ends goes to the governor which is a plastic tab with a hole on it. My problem is I don't know where the other end goes and the picuture in the manual is unclear, at least to me, the novice. Any ideas or help is appreciated. Also, I have replaced the plug, cleaned the carb, cleaned the gas tank and still have a rough running mower. If anyone can shed some light on this it would be appreciated. Otherwise, it is around the corner to the service shop for repair. Thanks much.

Hello Joe!
What hp, brand. and model engine do you have? Sounds like you might have a 3.5 or 4.0 Briggs and Stratton. If so, the end of the wire linkage with the hook goes into the plastic tab, and the other end goes into the carb throttle. There is a spring that goes into the loop. Does it sound like we're talking about the same engine?

Cheese, it is a 4 HP B & S and I took a look at it and have it back together. Thanks. Do you have any idea what may be causing it to run erratically. It is a pull the starter cord and it then starts and runs at one speed (no throttle adjustments). I have cleaned the gas tank, carb and even put in a new plug. The new plug was carboned up after a couple attempts to check out the engine not running properly. Any ideas would be appreciated. Could it be a timing problem? I noticed the plastic tab was moving wildly when I ran a couple of checks on the engine. Thanks again.

Hello: Joe V.
More detailed and engine specific information would be helpful.
What needs to be known, in my opinion, is the engine type. Model numbers on the manufacturers plate or stamped into the engine block.
Also if the engine is a vertical or horizontal shaft engine. Each engine uses different setups for the gov linkages, etc. Engine age may also be helpful since carb types may be different on the same engines which are used on other power equipment.
If there is no throttle control to adjust the engine speed, could be the carb, throttle linkage or gov linkage among other things.
If the new spark plug is carboning up in that short a period of time testing when it did not in the past, possible the carb adjustment screw settings are incorrectly set.
Assuming when you stated you cleaned the carb you took it apart? Or cleaned only the exterior? May be the carbs fuel float level is incorrect inside the carb.
Always several other possibilities. Knowing the engine specific information helps us to help you. Please provide more info.
Small engine repair parts are available at all local small engine repair shops and or lawn mower repair shops. They are listed in the phone book directory in every town.
Regards & Good Luck.

Tom, it is a 4HP B & S engine model 11Z084 and Type Co62 with an engine code of 90012. It is a fixed speed type set up. If you can shed any additional light on my problem please let me know. Otherwise, I'll have to take it to my local lawn mower repair shop. Thank you.

If you have an needle valve to ajdust the fuel mixture on the carb, then turn the screw counter-clockwise about 1/4 to 1/2 a turn and see if it keeps a steady speed. Another posibility is that the governor/throttle linkage may not be connected right. Hope you find the problem.

Sounds like a Quattro. No nice way to say anything about this engine IMHO. I couldn't find the model number you gave so am just venturing a guess that its a the plastic bodied carb with no float or ajustment of any kind. Did you put a new diaphragm in the carb? If so have you got the pressure spring installed correctly? Is the engine surging up and down? Thats what your description sounds like to me. If you didn't use a new diaphragm the engine could be starved for fuel or running to rich. If you can't overcome this problem on this Briggs 4HP don't feel to bad, you won't be the first....Mike

Mike, the engine is not stamped with Quattro and the owner's manual shows pictures with Quattro stamped on the 4HP Quattro. But, owner's manuals are oftentimes incorrect and not up to speed. It does surge up and down and I am sure the throttle linkage is correct. How is this machine timed? It is only a couple years old but I just may replace it with one with a throttle adjustment and simpler to maintain. If the rain here in New York State doesn't let up I will just invest in a few goats (lol). Thanks.

I agree with Mike...replace the carburetor diaphragm. It shouldn't take more than $5.00 and 30 minutes. That should solve your problem.
