Engine running problem

I have an older briggs 3 hp on an edger. I cleaned the air filter and put it back on and now it doesn't run. I'll pull the cord and it will run really fast and die? what has happened?

Does it have a foam-style filter on it? Check the filter housing...sometimes it gets bent down enough to get in the way of the throttle linkage and binds it up.

no thats not the problem because i can't start it with the filter off either. I think something must have been bumped causing it not to work right. I have one of those stupid carbs that leak( hope that is enough info) could it be that silver needle thing below the float?

Post your model # of the engine so that I know what engine and carb setup you have. If you have a needle that screws in under the float, try backing it out 1/2 turn or so.
