mower reving up and down

I have a Murray walk behind rear bagger mower with an automatic throttle. The mower is two years old. Once last year I had an issue where the engine kept reving up and down on it's own. After 20 minutes or so, it was OK. Now, the problem is back and it does not go away on it's own. I prime the gas, start the mower and everything is OK. Then, about a minute later, the engine keeps reving up and down. I do not see any springs missing from the mechanism nor do I see a way to adjust anything with these automatic throttles. Any ideas?

Hello Joe!

You don't mention what brand or hp engine you have, but judjing from your description of the problem, I bet you have a 3.5 Briggs and Stratton. If so, remove the carb and replace the diaphragm between the tank and the carb. This will stop the surging.
