Cranking Problem

Cranking a Craftsman!
I have a 5 year old Craftmsan self propelled lawn mower with a 6.75 hp B&S engine. Never had problems starting or running until this year. Replaced plug, air filter and oil. The main problem is the amount of friction it gives when trying to pull start it. After priming, it might take 20 pulls. And these pulls are darn near pulling my rotator cuff off if you know what I mean. The mechanism that the pull cord spins seems to not want to spin as easily as it used to, thus not allowing me to get enough speed for a good start. Is there some servicing I can do to this or even a relatively easy replacement. I'm up for the challenge. My shoulder and I thank you for your help.

Hello: Dvath
If I am reading your question correctly, the rope is hard to pull.
If the mower has a brake lever that you release to kill the engine, the brake may not be releasing or fully releasing.
That would be the most likely reason why the rope would be or could be hard to pull.
If there is any other known condition that happened during the last usage, explain. May be the cause. Also check the oil level.
Most likely I haven't covered all of the potential possibilities. The other resident small engine service and repair professionals may offer additional suggestions, advice & help.
Check back on your question several times over the next few days for additional replies.
