engine fires and runs great for about 10 seconds then it blows gasoline from valve cover vent and floods.
Needless to say there is also gas in the oil. I was using the mower when it died. any ideas?
I have pulled the carb and cleaned to no avail.

Hello coachhatman. Welcome to our Do-It-Yourself Web Site and our Small Engine forum.

Fuel has just way way to get into the engine. Through the carb. Based on the problem described, the carbs float is stuck down allowing fuel to overfill the bowl and or either the needle and or seat are defective.

Replace the needle and seat, check the float lever and be sure the float does not have a hole in it. If the float contains fuel inside it, it has a hole and must also be replaced.

Check the pin that attaches the float to the support bracket. If the holes on the support bracket. If they have pitt marks or a build up of corrosion, etc clear them out. Clean the pin.

Also check the vent hole in the top of the carb body. If that hole is plugged, clear it but do not enlarge it. Use a pin and a can of crpessed air to blow out the hole and all internal fuel passages.

Most likely I haven't covered all of the possibilities. The other resident small engine service and repair professionals may be able to offer additional suggestions, advice & help.

Hello coachhatman!

I agree with Sharp Advice, you have a carb problem. The float needle is allowing fuel to leak excessively. Do not run the engine with gas in the oil, it could ignite and explode, and it could also ruin the engine. Drain the oil, clean the carb, use a Qtip soaked with carb cleaner to swab out the fuel inlet/seat area, replace the float needle, replace the float if it has gas in it (listen for gas sloshing in it when you shake it), reassemble and make sure the float moves up and down freely. Refill engine with oil when you are confident that you have stopped the fuel leak, and give it a try.
