mower leaves "mohawks"

My 20-year-old Montogmery Wards gas mower has started leaving a high strip of grass when the bermuda grass is thick The strip isn't very wide. The strip seems to occur in the middle of the mower's path.
I sharpened the blade somewhat but both sides still have some nicks in them.

Hmm! You have the right sized blades, right?

Usually leaving a strip either means you don't have sharp enough blades, not enough blade rpm, or driving too fast while mowing.

Does it help to slow down any? Have you greased the pulleys (if possible)?

Hello Sid!

Jason is right. Another common problem is that the blades wear off at the ends eventually, causing them to shorten and leave a stripe down the center. Also if the front of the deck drops down considerably more than the rear, it will do this.
