Riding lawn Mower cracking noise in reverse

well this is an 1990 MTD 12-38 with a 7 speed transmatic transaxle.

everything is fine except in reverse gear; the transmission produce metalic cracking noises under load (like a realy small hill)
on flatland, no noise in reverse, it look like the reverse gear is skipping...

is it adjustable/rebuildable ?

Sounds like you may have a bad sprocket in the transaxle. You may be able to find the parts you need at this site. Good Luck.

Hello Smog!

Roger is right, you have internal problems. This unit is has no chains, so there are no sprockets to go bad, but there are a few gears. One or two of them are skipping. It is a really easy transaxle to repair...simple design and not many parts. When you find the gear that is bad, look at the brass bushings that hold the shaft in place that the gear is on. Most likely one or both are bad. Replace them and the gear(s) that are bad, squirt half a bottle of "OO" grease all over inside it, and button it back up.
