Question Engine identification

I hate to appear stupid, but, I just got a Craftsman rider in model#-917.254320. I simply cant find the manufacture's name or it's numbers. I think its a B&S but I'm not positive. It is a 16 HP opposed twin cylinder L head engine. Dose anyone know where I might find these numbers? Also, what are some identifing characteristics of an B&S or a Kohler.

Not a stupid question at all.

The machine is made by American Yard Products for Sears (model prefix #917). AYP is part of Electrolux and owns Weed Eater and Poulan too.

The engine is a: ENGINE, B & S, MODEL NO. 402707, TYPE NO. 0186-01.

Source of information is Sears.com and then "parts".

Hope that helps.
