ariens (?) weed trimmer
I bought a pre-assembled weed trimmer last year at the end of lthe season. I soon noticed oil puddling arouond top of the trimmer. I took it bac and they said they re-paired it. After I ulsed it this year it did the same thing three more times (after they said they repaired it three more times). Now they say I took some type of foam thing off it. I never took anything off it. I'm a handicapped 52 yr. old widow. I will bew taking it to a different repairman. What do ylou think the problem was and whly didn't thley lfix it.

Most likely the foam thing is a Foam oil catch that would be located on the air cleaner. If it is not that than you should look through your manual if you have one and see what other foam thing there could be that goes to your engine. My guess to whats really wrong is that you have a bad seal somewhere or missing seal, and is allowing oil to come out of the engine. Please wait in this forum for a guy named Cheese to reply to your message.

Hello joanmarie1!
I'm assuming you have a tecumseh engine on that trimmer. (they are known to do this). They are bad about leaking at the sump cover gasket and at the oil filler tube seal. The only foam thing I can think of that they might be talking about would be the air filter...if it has a foam filter. Most 3 to 4 hp briggs and stratton engines have foam filters too...so I'm not sure which you have. What brand engine is it, and horsepower?

It has a 6 hp engine and it is a Tecumseh engine. The air filter
was not a foam filter..i had to replace it twice...the one that came on it when I purchased it was like a stiff paper and so I bought the exact same kind. Do you think that the store where I purchased it put the wrong air filter on it when they assembled it? Should it have had a foam filter? I had to keep using it until I can get it fixed right. I keep having to put oil in it. The other day when I put oil in it so I could mow the yard a bluish white smoke burst out as did oil...it looked like it was coming from the air filter. Please don't tell me my trimmer is ruined!!!

It really should be under warranty if it is not a year old yet. And even so, you have had it in the shop for this problem several times before and it has not been fixed. If your engine is not overfilled with oil, you probably have internal problems like a broken ring or scored cylinder. It could be a PCV valve problem, but not likely. This unit should be replaced or repaired for you free of charge. The foam thing they are talking about is probably a pre-cleaner. Your unit probably didn't even come with one. If you didn't remove it, then either they did, or it didn't come with one, unless someone else uses it too.

No one but me and my son uses it. No one has touched any part of the trimmer but me, and I was the one who took the old air filter with me to the store to get one just like it. As I said before it started leaking the first time I had used it. Ace Hardware here in Dyersburg is where I purchased it. The mechanic there was really very rude. He said they repaired it four times and they weren't going to to do it anymore. He accused me pf removing the foam thing. I told him no one removed anything. I then told him if that was the problem in the very beginning why didn't he just repalce the foam thing when he fixed the filrst time. He insulted me and it upset me so bad I called the airens company.
They were very nince. Told me Ace Hardware here in town no longer serviced their products and gave me the name of a mechanic who did. I've got to get it to the palce this week. The warranty on my trimmer is for two years. If the problem is what you said will all that be under warraty? I appreciate all your help.

Any of these problems should be covered by the warranty. Get your sales reciept, and the papers from the previous repair shop to show that this has been an ongoing problem...not just recent, and if anything has gotten worse it was because it wasn't fixed the first time...when the problem began. Let us know how it goes!
