murray riding lawnmower

My riding lawnmower won't start. It makes this noise when you turn the ignition key (sounds like if like your car was already started and you accidentally turned the key on again). The battery is charged. The little spoke things that are attached to the starter do not seem to be touching the fly wheel thing. Do I need a new starter? Please help! Thanks I'm a woman and know very little about mechanics, btw...

Hello dawn_fawn_55!

The starter bendix drive gear is the "little spoke things" you mentioned. If the battery is connected backwards, or the bendix drive gear is stripped, or the bendix itself is bad, or the battery is weak, this will happen. What brand of engine is on the mower?
