Smile ignition problem

Hello cheese and all other members.
I have an older craftsman tractor with points and condenser.I think its an 80 or 81 model. My question is can i change it to electronic ignition by using a newer coil or a electronic kit that goes on the the old coil.It is an 10 hp briggs engine. Thanks again mowerman.

I think I have hurd Cheese say to people before to do away with the points and get a standard electronic ignition. But please wait till Cheese replies to make sure I am right.

Hello Mowerman!

Yes, you can convert it by simply installing a coil with electronic ignition. Just clip the wire going to the points and leave the points in there. Remove the coil, and install the new one. They are common, and used ones are cheap and rarely go bad.

Hope that helps!

Oh yeah...when you install the new coil, turn the flywheel so that the magnet is facing the coil. Then place a business card between the flywheel and coil and tighten the coil screws. This gives you the .010" air gap needed.
