2 Chainsaws with problems
I have 2 chainsaws:
a Poulan Pro 255
and a Makita Dcs 400
I was just given the Poulan it will start and run but the idle is high I tried to adjust it but it wont adjust what could the problem be ? (im guessing an air leak) Where should I go at with this one next ?
Now on to the Makita. Well I was just wondering is it very difficult to replace the drive sprocket and the clutch hub on this saw ? I was also wondering do I need to replace the clutch hub ? I know the drive sprocket is gone it has a lot of wear.. I can grab the clutch hub and wobble it on the crank shaft.. Or is this all due to the Sprocket being wore ? The makita has been a horrible saw it cost $500 canadian about 5 years ago and has hardly been used but has been very troublesome.. Also what would the estimated cost be on these parts ?
Thanks for any advice !

Lets start with the Poulan. Yes, typically a high idle - more specifically, a failure to idle down - situation usually indicates an air leak in the crankcase area. Whether it be the intake manifold (most common) or a crank seal needs to be determined. If you are absolutely certain that the throttle link isn't distorted and the idle speed screw isn't in all the way causing your problem then a crankcase vacuum leak test would be in order. I would first look at the intake manifold and check if any of the related gaskets are in poor shape or if any components to such are at all loose though. Most homeowners don't have the capability to perform a vacuum test and would require you to take to a service center - which being a DIYer, you'd like to avoid, I'm sure.
As for the Makita, I show no aftermarket parts available for this model from either Oregon or GB. You will likely have to find an authorized Makita dealer in your area to obtain parts. The fact that the clutch drum feels sloppy on the crankshaft is likely due to the drum bearing being worn - these are typically replaceable alone. As for your woes with this saw, I'm surprised. Usually these are good and reliable saws.
